What is Portable Appliance Testing?

A term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. Most electrical defects are identified by visual examination, but there are also some defects that can only be found by physical testing.

It is essential to understand the principles of visual examination which is a key part of PATs. The duty holder can provide basic internal training assisted by a brief checklist to form an electrical safety maintenance program. However, more formal visual Inspection and Testing by a competent person may also be required at appropriate intervals, depending upon the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.

Plym PAT Testing do get asked of intervals between PAT Testing, this is down to your companies Risk Assessment – we are always happy to advise and recommend through the Code of Practice.
